In the Spring of 2005,
the Lawyers Club of San Diego conducted its
14th annual survey to gauge equality and diversity
in the workplace. The Lawyers Club compiled
data from private law firms with 15 or more
attorneys in their San Diego offices. In the
article, the organization noted how the number
of female associates had increased modestly,
while the number of female partners at firms
remained stagnant. Despite these trends, Wilson
Petty Kosmo and Turner received highest rankings
in three categories: Gender Diversity, Ethnic
Diversity, and Parental Leave Policies. A

San Diego law firms are
hiring more women, but the number of female
partners is not on the rise, according to
figures released by the Lawyers Club of San
Diego.
As of this spring, the number
of female attorneys in San Diego increased
by 1 percent from a year ago, including a
3 percent jump in female associates.
However, the percentage
of partners who are female in private sector
firms -- 20 percent -- remains unchanged from
2004.
…"I think the
firms that have been successful in recruiting
and retaining female attorneys are just generally
those that create and implement policies recognizing
the importance of diversity in the workplace,"
said Tina Fryar, chairwoman of the club's
Equality Committee. "It's something that
firms have to be committed to doing.”
The Lawyers Club survey
consisted of information voluntarily provided
by 41 private law firms with 15 or more attorneys.
Wilson Petty Kosmo & Turner topped all
three categories. Two-thirds of Wilson Petty's
partners (six of eight) are female, while
68 percent of the office (13 of 19) is female.
