In the May 6, 2004 issue
of San Diego Daily Transcript, the
newspaper examined some of the reasons why
top notch companies rely on the Wilson,
Petty, Kosmo & Turner's diverse
attorneys for their legal needs. A partial
reprint of the article appears below:
In 1992, Regina Petty and
Claudette Wilson had a vision to practice
high-level, high-quality law and enjoy doing
it. Both women have seen their vision come
true at Wilson Petty Kosmo & Turner LLP.
Based in San Diego, the firm has both an extensive
litigation practice with national Fortune
500 clients and attorneys who truly take pleasure
in what they do.
"Claudette and I wanted
to enjoy our practice and enjoy our clients
in a great work environment while providing
a better product for our clients," Petty
said. "And I'm proud to say we've done
just that."
Wilson Petty is growing
rapidly and has a client list that includes
General Motors (NYSE: GM), Petco Animal Supplies
Inc. (Nasdaq: PETC), Johnson & Johnson
(NYSE: JNJ), Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F), Shell
Oil Co., Evans Hotels and several other top
notch companies.
"We have great clients
and we treat them well," Wilson said.
"We also treat our own people well."
Both Wilson and Petty joined
the legal profession in the mid-1980s at a
time when women in law were still somewhat
of an anomaly. Typically, the women of this
era that did brave law school went into "female
friendly" areas, such as family law.
Both women chose different tracks, with Wilson
joining one of San Diego's two largest law
firms to practice employment law and Petty
joining the other largest law firm to pursue
business litigation.
Wilson went on to serve
as in-house counsel for HomeFed Bank and in
1991 decided to re-enter private practice.
Petty joined her less than a year later.
"Coming from big law
firms, not only did we have extensive expertise,
we also had definite ideas on how to run a
firm and we wanted our firm to be unique,"
Petty said. And unique it is. Wilson Petty
is the largest women-owned firm in San Diego.
Six of the eight partners are women and two
of the partners are women of color.
The firm practices in areas
not typically associated with women. Partners
Vickie Turner and Meryl Maneker have an extensive
product liability practice, representing automobile
manufacturers throughout California and frequently
in other states. Turner and partner Lois Kosch's
practices include First Amendment and media
law, representing several of San Diego's media
outlets. Robin Wofford, who joined the firm
in 2002 as a partner, has a significant background
in employment and health care law. Real property
litigation, warranty law and general business
litigation round out Wilson Petty's cache
of services.
The firm's male partners,
Fred Kosmo and Michael Kalt, enjoy the environment
of working among women.
"Our firm isn't about
gender; it's about practicing quality law
and getting good results for our clients,"
said Kosmo, who joined the firm in 1992.
